Cloud Saves
The Cloud Saves feature provides access to Steam Cloud storage for the current user and application.
It supports both raw byte files and Unreal Engine USaveGame objects, allowing the same Steam Cloud backend to be used for custom file formats or standard Unreal save workflows.
Steam Cloud must be enabled for the application in Steamworks before it can be used reliably.
Main Capabilities
- Check whether Steam Cloud is enabled
- Write raw byte data to Steam Cloud
- Read raw byte data from Steam Cloud
- Delete cloud files
- Check whether a cloud file exists
- Enumerate files stored for the current application
- Save
USaveGameobjects directly to Steam Cloud - Load
USaveGameobjects from Steam Cloud
Basic Workflow
For a standard Unreal save workflow:
- Configure Steam Cloud for the application in Steamworks.
- Create or update your
USaveGameobject. - Call Save Game To Steam Cloud with a file name.
- Handle the success or failure callback.
- Later, call Load Game From Steam Cloud using the same file name.
- Cast the returned
USaveGameobject to your save class.
For custom file formats, use the raw byte read/write functions instead.
For Steamworks configuration, see Steamworks Setup.
For practical Blueprint workflows, see Examples.
Cloud File Information
Get Steam Cloud Save List returns FSteamCloudFileInfo entries containing the file name, size, and last modification timestamp.
File naming and save-slot organization are controlled entirely by your game.
Raw Files vs SaveGame Objects
Use the raw file API when your project already has its own serialization format or needs to store arbitrary byte data.
Use the USaveGame API when you want the plugin to serialize and deserialize Unreal SaveGame objects for you.
Both workflows use the same Steam Cloud storage for the current application.
Important Notes
- Steam Cloud must be enabled for both the application and the current Steam account.
- Existing files are overwritten when writing to the same file name.
- Steam Cloud stores files; it does not provide game-specific conflict resolution logic.
- Your game is responsible for file naming, save-slot rules, versioning, and migration logic.
- Cloud operations should be handled through their success and failure callbacks.
